Cambodian officials have reported another 12 people killed as a result of the ongoing border dispute with Thailand, with the death toll on both sides now standing at 32, as fears grow that the Southeast Asian neighbours may become engulfed in an extended conflict.
Thailand bombed Cambodia with F-16 fighter jets on Thursday, as relations between the two countries imploded following clashes on a disputed border near the Emerald Triangle.
The Thai Navy dispatched four vessels Saturday near its border to support land forces as a Thailand-Cambodia conflict entered a third day, according to the Khaosod English news website.
Cambodia has for the first time reported fatalities in its conflict with Thailand, taking the death toll to more than 30 as the two countries’ worst fighting in years expanded to include new areas along their shared border and Phnom Penh accused Bangkok of a naval incursion.
Tens of thousands of people sought refuge as border fighting between Thailand and Cambodia entered its third day Saturday, heightening fears of an extended conflict with the total death count reaching 32.
"There are reports of casualties and the Thai government is ordering the evacuation of certain areas," the U.S. State Department said in an alert.
