Race director Aaron Velthoven tells CBC News a 57-year-old U.S. man suffered “major medical emergency” around 8 kilometres into the race while on the Windsor, Ont., side.

Detroit — A 57-year-old-man running in the 2024 Detroit Free Press Marathon collapsed and died after medical treatment, race officials announced Sunday morning.

We're covering the 2024 Detroit Free Press Marathon presented by MSU Federal Credit Union as thousands of runners and handcyclists finish the race.

The weather was perfect for the 26,000 participants and our photographers were out in full force to capture all the moments along the course.

The 57-year-old marathoner collapsed near the fifth mile of the race, during the Canada stretch of the 26.2-mile event.

The runner, whose identity has not been released, was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Andy Bowman of Ferndale won the men's division of the 47th Detroit Free Press Marathon presented by MSU Federal Credit Union, with a time of 2:17:47. The marathon course covered both sides of the U.S.
