Political rivals accused former Governor Andrew Cuomo of corruption, while supporters claimed the Trump administration had weaponized the Department of Justice to interfere in New York City's mayoral race.

That office is headed up by former Fox News host Jeanine Pirro, a Cuomo critic who unsuccessfully ran against him for state attorney general in 2006. A spokesperson for Cuomo, who is running for New York City mayor, offered a searing statement saying the Democrat had not been notified of the probe.

Two large New York City-based lobbying outfits are providing staff — sometimes for free — to the frontrunner’s bid.
