BrucePac is recalling nearly 10 million pounds of meat and poultry products because they may be contaminated with listeria bacteria, which​ can cause illness and death.

While recalls have become almost commonplace recently, the causes of products being pulled from shelves vary in severity. Amongst the most dangerous is contaminated food which could potentially lead to sickness and even death.

Philadelphia schools deal with a listeria scare after serving potentially contaminated meat and poultry from a nationwide recall.

BrucePac, a company that produces ready-to-eat meat and poultry foods, is recalling nearly 10 million pounds of meat products because they might be contaminated with a bacteria that causes the serious infection listeriosis, according to a report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The Philadelphia School District said Friday that it was impacted by a nationwide recall of meat products from an Oklahoma supplier due to listeria concerns, though there have been no reports yet of people getting sick.

The School District of Philadelphia informed families on Friday that meals served to thousands of Pre-K and K-12 students across nearly 200 schools are subject to a nationwide food recall.

Whitsons Culinary Group, a food supplier, notified the district Friday that chicken products served between Sept. 23 and Oct. 10 are part of a nationwide recall.
