HMS Dragon has begun its journey to the eastern Mediterranean to join the UK's defensive operations in the region. The Type 45 destroyer left its dock in Portsmouth on Tuesday afternoon, having only recently come out of maintenance. It will be the UK's first and only warship in the region when it arrives in about a week.
Sir Keir Starmer confirmed the UK would be sending the ship, one of the Royal Navy’s six Type 45 air defence destroyers, after the attack on RAF Akrotiri.
In an interview with UK defence secretary John Healey, Sky's Alistair Bunkall asked him when the option to deploy a Royal Navy destroyer first hit his desk. He suggested he had had options for weeks and did not disagree when asked if it was his decision to delay.
