Hurricane Oscar, now downgraded to a tropical storm over Cuba, was the smallest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic basin, meteorologists said Monday. When the storm formed Saturday, hurricane hunters found Oscar’s hurricane wind field was only 5 to 6 miles across.

The storm’s forecast track poses no threat to Florida. Oscar formed Saturday off the coast of the Bahamas and brushed past the Turks and Caicos islands to the south. The National Hurricane Center earlier characterized the storm as “tiny,” but hurricane warnings were in place Sunday for southeastern Bahamas and portions of Cuba.

Hurricane Oscar is expected to make landfall along Guantanamo or Holguin, Cuba, by Sunday afternoon, forecasters said. Meanwhile, Nadine dissipated Sunday.
