A tsunami advisory was also issued for the Aleutian Islands in Alaska​, and a tsunami watch was issued for Hawaii, the U.S. National Weather Service said.

US authorities issued tsunami warnings for Alaska and Hawaii. It warned of three-metre waves hitting Hawaii. Waves one to three meters (3.3 to 10 feet) high could also threaten Japan, according to the Japanese government, and the US island territory of Guam, according to the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Center based in Honolulu.

Hawaii is being warned that "urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property." Watches have been ordered for California, Oregon, Washington and a vast swath of Alaska’s coastline.
