October's supermoon, known as the "Hunter's Moon," will be the biggest and brightest full moon of the year. Why it matters: The third of this year's four consecutive supermoons arrives during an active month of skywatching between rare northern lights sightings and the once-in-a-lifetime comet.

While a supermoon is technically bigger and brighter than a regular full Moon, it only appears about 7% larger—which can be an imperceptible difference to the human eye, depending on other conditions.

The hunter's moon, the first full moon of fall, will be visible Thursday. It will also be the third consecutive supermoon of 2024. See schedule.
