Tsunami alerts were issued for Alaska and Hawaii on Tuesday after a major, 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Russia, according to officials.

A powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake off Russia's far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula has triggered tsunami warnings in Japan and several states in the western United States, including Hawaii, Alaska and California.

OAKLAND, Calif. - The National Weather Service issued a tsunami advisory for the California coast Tuesday night following a series of large earthquakes in Russia. The tsunami advisory is in effect from the British Columbia-Alaska border to the California-Mexico border.
