Detroit — A 57-year-old-man running in the 2024 Detroit Free Press Marathon collapsed and died after medical treatment, race officials announced Sunday morning.

A uniquely sweet finish at the Detroit Free Press Marathon was soured Sunday after a runner collapsed and later died during the race.

The 57-year-old marathoner collapsed near the fifth mile of the race, during the Canada stretch of the 26.2-mile event.

Also a first, the half and full marathons featured elite runners who had to qualify. The first-place winners for the men’s and women’s full marathon belonged to a husband and wife who live in Ferndale. Andrew Bowman celebrating an amazing feat, but the win was not complete without his other half.
