U.S. authorities say arrests for illegal border crossings from Mexico plunged 39% in January, an early gauge of President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

Border crossings continued to plummet in the first weeks of the second Trump administration, a trend that began after former President Joe Biden strictly limited asylum claims.

In January, the number of migrant encounters at the border dropped to the lowest since September 2020, with 61,465 encounters, a 36% decline since the previous month and a 65% drop since last January.
