Famed former Laney College football coach and current athletic director John Beam was shot on the school's Oakland campus late Thursday morning, according to sources.

John Beam’s death has rocked everyone who knew or knew about him. From professional sports to high school sports, the outpouring of admiration and love for the 66-year-old former Oakland football coach who was gunned down on Thursday at Laney College and died Friday has been non-stop.

Beam died earlier Friday after a shooting on the Laney campus, where he was athletic director. A suspect, 27-year-old Cedric Irving Jr., is reportedly in custody and the authorities have described the attack as targeted, with the suspect and victim apparently knowing each other.
