A surge in inmate overdoses is forcing the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office to make changes to how inmates are processed at Estrella Jail in Phoenix.

In just about a week's time, Estrella Jail reported a dozen inmate overdoses and one inmate death, and officials with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office believe they know what caused the overdoses.

A statement from the Sheriff's Office said investigators believed the drugs tied to the overdoses were smuggled into the jail inside genitalia.

Two people overdosed at the Estrella Jail on Tuesday night, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said. This comes after the news that an inmate died from an overdose and 11 others survived an overdose in the same jail within the last two weeks.
