Kroger has agreed to pay $110 million to resolve a lawsuit by the state of Kentucky alleging the supermarket chain's pharmacies helped fuel a deadly opioid epidemic by flooding its communities with hundreds of millions of doses of addictive painkillers.

Kentucky will receive $110 million to settle its lawsuit accusing one of the nation’s largest grocery chains of helping fuel the opioid epidemic, the state's attorney general said Thursday. The state will use the money it is getting in its settlement with The Kroger Co.

The lawsuit, filed last year, accused Kroger pharmacies of dispensing 11 percent of all opioid pills statewide over 13 years, totaling 444 million doses.

The Kroger Company will pay $110 million in settlement funds to the Commonwealth for their part in the opioid crisis, according to a press release from the Kentucky Attorney General. Attorney General Russell Coleman announced the settlement on Thursday during a press conference at Life Learning Center in Covington.

In a press release, Attorney General Russell Coleman announced the settlement, which comes following a February 2024 lawsuit against the company.
