NEW DELHI (Reuters) -India named Shubman Gill as their new test captain on Saturday, picking the top-order batter over pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah ahead of their five-test series in England beginning on June 20.

India have confirmed Shubman Gill as their new Test captain. Rohit Sharma retired from Test duty earlier in May – a move that was followed by former captain Virat Kohli also bowing out of the longest format. And it has now been announced that top-order batter Gill will take over India's red-ball team.

Shubman Gill has been chosen as the new Test captain, as was expected over the last few weeks, while wicketkeeping batsman Rishabh Pant will be his deputy.
