Mayor LaToya Cantrell is now the second New Orleans mayor to face criminal charges, after a federal indictment landed Friday, and the first to do so while in office.

The indictment is the culmination of a long-running federal corruption investigation into Cantrell, the first female mayor in the city’s 300-year history.

The mayor and her police bodyguard are accused of defrauding the city of $70,000 while conducting a secret three-year affair.
