State police in Maine say a passenger in a car fatally shot his mother before shooting at passing vehicles, killing another motorist and injuring two others, then dying by suicide.

Maine State Police Col. William Ross said Davis was experiencing a mental health crisis before the incident, which resulted in the deaths of the suspect’s mother and a woman who worked at two elementary schools in the area.

As he was sitting in the passenger seat of a car his mom was driving, a 29-year-old man pulled out a gun and fatally shot her, Maine police said. Then, James Davis III shot at three more random cars passing by on the road, killing one other person and injuring two, Maine State Police said in an April 3 news release.
