Eubie Blake was born in 1887 and was a ragtime pianist, wildly successful vaudeville performer, and composer of one of the first black-written, acted, and directed musical on Broadway, Shuffle Along (1922). It was so popular that it is credited with helping to usher in the Harlem Renaissance, and had a profound effect on the musicals to follow, as it was the first to showcase a ‘jazzy’ score. ‘I’m Just Wild about Harry’, ‘Memories of You’, ‘Love Will Find a Way’ and many other came from his pen.
