Tonga has a long tradition of fakaleiti, which literally means “like a lady.” Leitis, as they prefer to be called, have been hosting the Miss Galaxy beauty pageant since 1993 for the trans community. Now as conservative Christianity is on the rise and leitis are finding work abroad, the future of the pageant is unclear.
