It is not surprising that the largest monument at Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia is for "Our Confederate Dead", which is a phrase that appears numerous times throughout the grounds. Like so many other statues and monuments across the Deep South, this was constructed in the 1870s during the height of Reconstruction. Ironically enough, the smaller (but more well known) "Lion of Atlanta" sculpture was removed in 2021 due to a combination of wanting to protect it from vandalism and also provid
